Get Caught Reading!

Photo by Miguel Castenada via Flickr

May is Get Caught Reading Month, sponsored by the Association of American Publishers (AAP). Get Caught Reading is “a nationwide campaign to remind people of all ages how much fun it is to read” – now there’s a platform we can support!

The campaign features posters of celebrities of all stripes reading, from singer Alicia Keyes reading The Secret Life of Bees to soccer star Alex Morgan reading The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. The newest celebrity poster shows Mercer Mayer, creator of the Little Critter series of children’s books.

Where will you get caught reading this month? Note: Always wear your helmet when reading on a motorcycle!

It’s elementary

Today is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s birthday. Born May 22, 1859, Doyle is of course best known as the creator of pioneering crime fiction featuring detective Sherlock Holmes.

The Montclair Library Mystery section has classic Doyle stories like The Complete Sherlock Holmes and The Great Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, as well as Holmes-inspired works like Barry Grant’s Sherlock Holmes and the Shakespeare Letter and Garment of Shadows: A Novel of Suspense Featuring Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes by Laurie R. King.

Or learn about The London of Sherlock Holmes from author Michael Harrison.

If you’d prefer to watch your Holmes on a screen, check out the BBC’s series “Sherlock” on DVD or the 2010 “Sherlock Holmes” movie featuring Robert Downey, Jr. as Holmes.

Waiting for Gatsby

The Great Gatsby cover by Francis Cugat

If you’ve already read The Great Gatsby (or you’re waiting for your hold to come up at the library – it’s a hot commodity right now!) and are looking for some reading to tide you over until Baz Lurhmann’s film adaptation comes out next week, here’s a list Emily Temple put together on Flavorwire of “10 Books to Read While Youโ€™re Waiting for โ€˜The Great Gatsbyโ€™ to Come Out.”

The wide-ranging list features “similarly jazzy, indulgent, socially critical reads,” including Rules of Civility by Amor Towles, Ernest Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast, and Jazz by Toni Morrison.

PS – For a fascinating look at Gatsby book covers over the years and around the world, see this article from Business Insider.

Saturday at the library

Free Comic Book Day photo by Selena N.B.H. via Flickr
Just a reminder that not only is the library open tomorrow, Saturday May 4, but it’s also hosting 2 fun events:

Free Comic Book Day – 10:00am-5:00pm
According to the Free Comic Book Day organizers, “Comic books are an original American art form, created in the early days of the twentieth century. They are fun to read, featuring a wide range of diverse story lines that capture the imagination of the readers.” Head in to a participating library branch, including Montclair, to pick up a free comic. This event is for all ages. Limits will vary branch to branch and are only available while supplies last. The following branches are participating: 81st, Brookfield, Chavez, Dimond, Eastmont, Elmhurst, Golden Gate, Lakeview, Montclair, Piedmont, Rockridge, Temescal, West Oakland, and Main TeenZone.

Bookmaking Workshop – 1:00-2:30pm
Kids ages 9-15 are invited to learn how to make two surprising books: one made from a single sheet of paper, and one that can be read in many ways (you’ll see!). Participants will make both books and then fill them using imagination and supplies on hand. All materials provided; no experience necessary. Space is limited, so please sign up in advance at the reference desk.
