Summer movies

Alexis Denisof as Benedick and and Amy Acker as Beatrice in Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing

Alexis Denisof as Benedick and and Amy Acker as Beatrice in Joss Whedon’s “Much Ado About Nothing”

The summer movie season is upon us, and as usual, many of this summer’s hits are inspired by books.

We probably all know that “The Great Gatsby” is based on the book of the same name by F. Scott Fitzgerald, or that Joss Whedon’s “Much Ado About Nothing” was originally a play by William Shakespeare.

But did you know that “What Maisie Knew,” with its seemingly very modern tale of divorcing parents, is inspired by Henry James’ 1897 novel? Or that the animated “Epic” has its roots in The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs, a picture book by William Joyce?

Looking through the current movie listings on SFGate here are some books to pair with movies both new and old playing around the Bay Area this week — some of the books inspired the movie directly or indirectly, and some are useful companions to the movie:

Movie: “42”
Book: Jackie Robinson: A Biography by Arnold Rampersad

Movie: “Flight of the Butterflies”
Book: Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver

Movie: “Ice Age: Continental Drift”
Book: Sabertooths and the Ice Age: A Nonfiction Companion to Sunset of the Sabertooth by Mary Pope Osborne and Natalie Pope Boyce

Movie: “Iron Man”
Book: Iron Man: I am Iron Man by Mark Fergus; adapted by Lisa Rao (easy reader)

Movie: “Kon-Tiki”
Book: Kon-Tiki: Across the Pacific by Raft by Thor Heyerdahl

Movie: “Man of Steel”
Book: Superman: The Story of the Man of Steel by Ralph Cosentino (picture book)

Movie: “Mr. Popper’s Penguins”
Book: Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater

Movie: “Mud”
Book: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

Movie: “Oz the Great & Powerful”
Book: The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum or Wicked by Gregory Maguire

Movie: “The Dark Knight Rises”
Book: Batman: The Story of the Dark Knight by Ralph Cosentino (picture book)

Movie: “The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things”
Book: The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things by JT LeRoy

Loved the movie? Read the book! What’s your favorite movie adaptation of a book?

Today’s Google Doodle honors Maurice Sendak, the children’s book author and illustrator who would have turned 85 today.

A quick search for Sendak at the Montclair Library turns up 55 items by and about Sendak in the Children’s section, including a biography of him by Charlotte Guillain, the classic Where the Wild Things Are, the punchy poem about months Chicken Soup with Rice, and the recent “Where the Wild Things Are” movie.

Return those books on time

Keith Richards at NYPL - photo by Jori Klein

Rolling Stone Keith Richards may be known as a rock-and-roll bad boy, but you probably didn’t know he was also a library scofflaw.

The New York Times reports that “Mr. Richards, in an interview with The Mirror, confessed that more than 50 years ago, as a teenager, he failed to return a number of books to his local library in Dartford, England, resulting in fines that British newspapers estimated would now have compounded to anywhere from £3,000 to £20,000 (about $4,500 to $30,000).”

Richards has been quoted elsewhere in praise of libraries, saying, “When you are growing up, there are two institutional places that affect you most powerfully: the church, which belongs to God, and the public library, which belongs to you. The public library is a great equalizer.”

Read more about Richards in his autobiography, Life, or check out “The Best of the Rolling Stones” on CD, at the Montclair Library.

Summer reading list from Cal

Photo by Kai Schreiber via Flickr

It’s not too early to start thinking about summer reading! UC Berkeley recently published its annual list of recommended summer reading for incoming freshmen. This year’s list, featuring fiction and non-fiction, novels and poetry, classics and contemporary books, was compiled from the recommendations of graduating seniors.

Whether you’re in the class of 2017 or have been out of school for decades, the choices are inspiring:

How about Stumbling on Happiness by Daniel Gilbert, a psychologist’s entertaining look at what makes people happy and why.

Or Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, a tale of loss and recovery as a young boy searches for clues in the wake of his father’s death in the World Trade Center collapse.
