UNBOUND winners 2014

We’re delighted to announce the winners of our 2014 UNBOUND Book Art & Craft Contest! Thank you to everyone who entered – you can see more views of the winners and other entries on our Book Craft Pinterest board.

In the Kids (ages 5-12) division, the judges were wowed by first place winner 12-year-old Elena’s “Home for Vintage Birds.” Made from a damaged birdhouse covered with pages and covers from Birds of the World, the piece illustrates, in Elena’s words, that “Old or damaged, a home is still a home.”

Kids 1st Place winner by Elena

Second place in the Kids division went to our youngest entrant, 5-year-old Sarai, who painted a jubilant rainbow heart over pages from an old French book.

Kids 2nd place winner by Sarai

Teen (ages 13-18) winner Karsen used an old atlas to create an untitled piece with blooming flowers.

Teen 1st place winner Karsen

And Teen second-place winner Roy used quilled book pages from The Yellow Birds in the shape of a bird in his piece “Wings of War.”

Teen 2nd place winner Roy

In the Adult division, first place goes to Audrey Larsen’s “Dive into a Good Book!”, which combines a carved out Harry Potter book with images from The Ocean World of Jacques Cousteau to create a “window into the ocean.”

Adult 1st place winner Audrey Larsen

Second place winner Kamni Vijay turned a history book about Lewis and Clark into “Lewis & Clark Journal of Adventure,” which looks like a scrapbook or journal one of the adventurers might have kept to chronicle their “critical motivations and highlights of their expedition.”

Adult 2nd place winner Kamni Vijay

We really enjoyed seeing all the entries, and look forward to hosting the contest again next year. We’re working to arrange a display of the entries – stay tuned for details. And thanks again to Montclair Village’s HoneyBee3D for donating the adult first place prize!

May is National Bike Month, sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists to showcase the many benefits of bicycling and encourage more folks to give biking a try.

The Oakland Public Library has bike-themed events planned all month long, starting with hosting an Energizer Station for Bike to Work Day today, May 8th, at the Lake Merritt BART Station. OPL’s Mobile Bike Library (did you know they had one?) will be at City Hall’s Energizer Station.

This Saturday, May 10th, talk and ride with bike book author Elly Blue from the Chavez branch to the 81st Avenue branch.

Other bike events at libraries include a Bike Mechanics Workshop at the 81st Avenue branch Saturday, May 17th and a Scraper Bike Program Saturday, May 31st at Main.

Plus, show your library card at participating bike stores from May 1 through May 31 and get 10% off parts and accessories.

Visit www.oaklandlibrary.org/biketoaction for the latest information on Bike Month events and participating bike shops.

If you’re looking for books to help you get started with biking or improve your skills, check out one of these books from the Montclair branch:

It’s Gardening Time!

Planting Native Garden photo by Forest Service Northern Region via Flickr

It’s spring, Tuesday was Earth Day, and if you’re a gardener your mind is on plants and soil (along with how to make every drop of water count this summer).

If you’re ready to get your hands dirty, this Saturday, April 26th, from 10am-1pm, you’re invited to come help with the next phase of turning the library’s wild backyard into a low-water-use, bird- and butterfly-friendly garden featuring native plants. Volunteers will be weeding and discussing the next steps and the design process. There may be some trees to plant as well. If you can help, please RSVP with Lynne Cutler at lcutler@oaklandlibrary.org. The event is part of Oakland’s Earth Day celebration, when over 3,000 volunteers will help clean and green over 90 locations throughout Oakland.

If you’re looking for some inspiration for your own garden, check out one of these books about gardening from the Montclair branch:
