Remembering D-Day

D-Day: The Normandy Invasion photo by US Army

Tomorrow, June 6, 2014, is the 70th anniversary of D-Day, the date in 1944 when 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified coastline in Normandy, France. An unimaginable 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed or wounded, but the effort kick-started the final phase of World War II that ultimately ended with an Allied victory. You can learn more about D-Day on the Army’s website, or through materials like these at the Montclair library:

D-Day, June 6, 1944: The Climactic Battle of World War II by Stephen E. Ambrose (940.54214 AMBROSE) “Using eyewitness accounts from both sides of the battlefield, Ambrose reconstructs the invasion that turned the tables of WWII in favor of the allies.” — PW Reviews 1995 May #3

Double Cross: The True Story of the D-Day Spies by Ben Macintyre (940.54214 MACINTYRE) The story of the six double agents whose job was to weave a web of deception to protect the secret of the Allied invasion.

The Guns at Last Light: The War in Western Europe, 1944-1945 by Rick Atkinson (940.5421 ATKINSON) “Tells the dramatic story of the titanic battle for Western Europe from D-Day to the thrust to the heart of the Third Reich.” — Encore

The Greatest Generation by Tom Brokaw (940.54 BROKAW) Personal narratives of WWII soldiers.

Band of Brothers (videorecording) HBO miniseries based on true stories of “Easy” Company (part of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division) as told in the book of the same name by Stephen Ambrose (available from the Main library)

Mystery Night June 17th

East Bay mystery writers Terry Shames and Jonnie Jacobs will read from and discuss their latest work on Tuesday, June 17, at 6:30 pm at the Montclair Branch. This is the first in what is hoped to be an annual Mystery Night event. Books by each author will be available for sale and signing courtesy of A Great Good Place for Books.

Mystery author Terry ShamesTerry Shames is the best-selling author of mysteries featuring ex-chief of police Samuel Craddock. The setting is the small, fictional town of Jarrett Creek, Texas, loosely based on the area where she grew up. Ms. Shames will read from The Last Death of Jack Harbin, which Library Journal gave a starred review, noting that “The lead’s folksy tone belies astute detecting, and the plotting will dazzle readers.” She will also discuss what it’s like to write a mystery series — the joys and tribulations. The author currently resides in Berkeley and is the Vice-President of the Northern California chapter of Sisters in Crime.

Mystery author Jonnie JacobsJonnie Jacobs is the author of fourteen mystery and suspense novels, including two series: the Kali O’Brien novels of legal suspense and the Kate Austen suburban mysteries. A former practicing attorney who writes crime fiction to “bring a sense of justice to the world,” Ms. Jacobs will be discussing her current release, Lying with Strangers — the provocative story of two very different women and the tragic event that brings them together. Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, she is an active member of Sisters in Crime and Mystery Writers of America, and has served on the Edgar Awards Committee.

This free community event is being co-sponsored by the Friends of the Montclair Library and the Oakland Public Library. For more information, please call (510) 482-7810 or visit www.oaklandlibrary.org.

Dogs at the library

Reading to dogs at the Southworth Library

New and emerging readers can now read to Natasha the dog every other Wednesday at the Montclair Library. Upcoming dates are May 28, June 11 and June 25.

Natasha is a certified BARK therapy dog who loves listening to kids read. Reading to dogs can help increase kids’ reading confidence, skill and enjoyment.

Of course there’s no shortage of books about dogs out there (485 in the Montclair library kids’ collection to be exact, according to the catalog), from picture book classics like Clifford the Big Red Dog and Harry the Dirty Dog to heart-tugging tales of
canine loyalty and bravery like Balto and Hachiko.

Here are a few of our favorite picture books about dogs working, playing and being dogs (descriptions are from the Encore catalog):

Doggone Dogs! by Karen Beaumont
Ten unruly dogs get loose at obedience school, and when they are captured by the dog-catcher, they work together to effect their escape and return home.

Please Take Me for a Walk by Susan Gal
A dog gives many good reasons it likes to go for a walk – to chase away the neighbor’s cat, to greet people on the street, to watch guys shooting hoops and to feel the wind lifting its ears.

Go, Dog. Go! by P. D. Eastman

I am the Dog by Daniel Pinkwater
Jacob trades places for the day with his dog Max and discovers the joys of chasing balls, eating kibble and getting scratched behind the ears.

The Night I Followed the Dog by Nina Laden
A boy follows his dog one night to see what exactly dogs do at night when they’re on their own.

Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann
The children at Napville Elementary School always ignore Officer Buckle’s safety tips, until a police dog named Gloria accompanies him when he gives his safety speeches.

A Ball for Daisy by Chris Raschka
A wordless picture book showing the fun a dog has with her ball, and what happens when it is lost.

Oh No, George! by Chris Haughton
George finds it hard to be a good dog when there are cats to chase, flowers to dig up, and a delicious cake sitting on the kitchen table.

Dogs by Emily Gravett
Big dogs, small dogs, stripy dogs, spotty dogs. There are so many different kinds of dogs. How can anyone pick one type of dog to love the most?

See Me Run by Paul Meisel
A dog has a fun-filled day at the dog park in this easy-to-read story.
