Back-to-school reading

The New York Times published a back-to-school list of books for new and reluctant readers August 21st. The list includes off-the-beaten path recommendations like Daniel Pinkwater’s The Big Orange Splot, about the importance of being yourself, and William Steig’s Amos & Boris, which chronicles the unlikely friendship between a mouse and a whale.

Here are some more books in the Montclair collection to get you back in the spirit of school (and there are lots more fiction and non-fiction books about school at the library – try searching the library catalog for your grade to see what comes up!):

Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten by Joseph Slate
Junie B., First Grader (At Last!) by Barbara Park
Keena Ford and the Second-Grade Mix-Up by Melissa Thomson
Stuey Lewis Against All Odds: Stories from the Third Grade by Jane Schoenberg (also Justin Case: School, Drool, and Other Daily Disasters by Rachel Vail)
Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume
Frindle by Andrew Clements (fifth grade)

And for a zany peek at school life, try Dan Gutman’s hilarious “My Weird School” chapter books, like Mrs. Dole is Out of Control! and Mr. Docker is Off His Rocker!

Have a great school year!

Adult summer reading program

Book in grass photo by Florin Gorgan via Flickr

Sure, OPL offers summer reading programs for kids and teens — but did you know adults can get in on the fun, too?

Readers age 19 and up can read a book and write a short review, or complete three different library activities. Activities are easy and fun, and help you use the library in different ways:

Each review or a 3 activities earns you an entry in a raffle for fun prizes like a Kindle Fire HD, a Clipper card, or gift cards from Safeway and Fenton’s.

The contest runs through August 10th, and the grand prize raffle will be held August 24th. See the library for details and an activity card/entry form to get started. Happy reading!

P.S. Looking for some summer reading inspiration? Check out the themed lists from NPR critics, like “5 Forgotten Classics Worth Re-visiting” and “5 Great Historicals for Summer.”

Don’t forget the ice cream

Cookbook author Jennie SchachtDon’t forget that the Montclair Library has a great adult program coming up this Tuesday, July 16th at 6pm – local author Jennie Schacht will be here to talk about her new book, I SCREAM SANDWICH!, followed by ice cream sandwich tasting. For more details, see our previous post.

If you’re looking for more summer dessert inspiration, check out this list of dessert cookbooks from the OPL blog. My vote for most intriguing title goes to Modern Art Desserts: Recipes for Cakes, Cookies, Confections, and Frozen Treats Based on Iconic Works of Art by Caitlin Freeman (at the Main Library).

One more fun summer treat fact: Oakland is the birthplace of both rocky road ice cream and popsicles!
