Good reviews

There was a nice plug for the Montclair branch in today’s Berkeley Parents Network “Recommendations” newsletter – someone asked which libraries in the area were good for toddlers, and this was one of the responses:

…in Oakland I think that the Montclair Library is great for toddlers. In addition to lots of picture books on the shelves, they have several baskets of board books on the floor that the kids can go through on their own. They also have lots of puppets, puzzles, and some boxes of blocks and cars that kids can play with. It is pretty easy to park on the street nearby as well!

Hey, thanks! And by the way, if you haven’t been to Toddler Storytime (for kids up to age 3) at the Montclair branch, check it out every Thursday from 10:15-10:45am – but get there early – it’s popular!

District 4 city council member Libby Schaaf came by the Montclair branch yesterday to meet with staff and Friends and find out what’s on our minds. Libby, who has been coming to the Montclair branch since she was a kid, helped us troubleshoot some traffic and parking issues (look for new paint coming to the green curb in front of the library, for starters) and talked about our goals and needs and some of the financial issues the city is facing.

If you live in District 4 and haven’t already, sign up for Libby’s email newsletter or visit her Facebook page to stay informed on what’s going on in our district and our city.

New children’s learning materials

New learning center in actionThe Friends donated money to allow Children’s Librarian Miriam to purchase some materials to help engage our littlest visitors. The new children’s learning center features age-appropriate (and easy to clean!) manipulatives like plastic cars, soft blocks, interlocking shapes, puzzles and more in a new shelf, and is already getting lots of use. Your book sale purchases and donations in action!

Hambone and other stuff

Unique Derique, clown and hambone artist

This Tuesday, February 1, at 7pm, the Montclair branch presents a free children’s show by Unique Derique, an Emmy Award winning clown who is internationally known for his unique blend of hambone (a form of body drumming), circus skills and modern day physical comedy. In honor of African American History Month, Derique will tell the story of how African-American slaves were deprived of drums and developed the traditional form of body percussion known as hambone.

Upcoming closures

Book tree by Juniper Books

A couple of quick reminders:

1) The Montclair branch will be closed Saturday, December 25-Thursday, December 30 for holidays and budget shortages. The branch will also be closed Saturday, January 1 for New Year’s Day. The good news is, there’s a brand new shiny book drop outside in addition to the two there previously, so there will be more space to return your books while the library is closed.

2) If you haven’t been into the branch and confirmed your library card recently, it’s that time of year. Please take a moment next time you’re in the branch to make sure all your information is current, or you may find that your card has expired and services like placing holds or making renewals online have been temporarily suspended.

Books for sale!

Books for Sale, photo courtesy of Norfolk, NE library on Flickr

Just got back from sorting book donations – there are a lot of great books for sale at the library right now! Stop in during regular library hours and browse the selection – if the weather’s nice, adult books are usually outside; if it’s raining, take a right once you get inside to find the adult hardcovers and nonfiction, and a left to get to children’s books and adult paperbacks.

Current highlights (first come, first served): Giada’s Kitchen: New Italian FavoritesGiada’s Kitchen by Giada De Laurentiis; a bunch of Wally Lamb novels; lots of paperback mysteries and juicy reads like The Devil Wears Prada (long holiday plane trip, anyone?); gift-quality hardbacks like Live From New York for your favorite SNL fan and Colin Jones’ Paris for the Francophile; memoirs and biographies like Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky; funny books like Christopher Moore’s Bloodsucking Fiends.

On the kids’ shelf: Classics like The Little Engine that Could and The Little Prince; almost the entire A Series of Unfortunate Events from #1-11 (missing 7 and 8); holiday and winter books about snowmen, the Twelve Days of Christmas and Santa; American Girl books; beautiful copies of three princess-frog kind of books by E.D. Baker; lots of Clifford books and easy readers; kid-pleasing soft-covers like How I Became a Pirate and Officer Buckle & Gloria.
