Thanks, Montclair!

Thanks to everyone who came out to our re-opening party and booksale today! There were cookies, cake (courtesy of city councilwoman Jean Quan’s office), face-painting and lots of books donated and sold. And thanks to the tireless volunteers who toted books, helped with the sale, painted faces and everything else. We had a lovely time, and hope you did, too.

Behind the Wheel of the Bookmobile

This item isn’t directly related to the Montclair library, but it’s of interest to book and library lovers. Authors Tom Corwin and Peter Laufer have purchased a classic bookmobile with plans to drive it across country. At stops along the way, the public will be invited in to choose a book in exchange for interviews about books that have changed their lives, and the project will be turned into a documentary film. The project launched this month at the American Library Association conference in Chicago. Authors with Bay Area connections are well-represented, including Robert Mailer Anderson, Tamim Ansary, Ethan Canin, Michael Chabon, Peter Coyote, Dave Eggers, Andrew Sean Greer, Daniel Handler, Paul Hawken, Annie Lamott, Armistead Maupin, Christopher Moore, Don Novello, Michael Pollan, Amy Tan, Vendela Vida and Ayelet Waldman — many of whom will actually be taking a turn behind the wheel.

More info at http://bookmobiletravels.com.

Why not celebrate by stopping into the library this summer to pick up a book by one of these authors, or re-read a book that changed your life. Or email us your story of a book that changed your life at fomlibrary@gmail.com, and we may feature it in a future blog post.

Summer Reading Update

Slight change to previous post about the kids’ summer reading program: If you registered at another branch and want to transfer your registration to the Montclair branch now that it has reopened, please fill out a new reading program card with one of the friendly volunteers at the Montclair branch and they’ll help you transfer your points over and track future reading.

Happy reading!

Summer Reading Program for Kids

Kids ages 13 and under are invited to participate in the Oakland Library’s summer reading program, which runs through August 9th.  Pre-readers can even participate by having someone read to them!

If you signed up for summer reading at another Oakland library branch while the Montclair library was closed, you can ask them to transfer your reading card to Montclair (if you identified Montclair as your branch when you signed up, your card should be transferred automatically).

If you haven’t signed up yet, there’s still plenty of time!  Stop by the Montclair branch during regular hours or at our re-opening party from 11am-3pm on Saturday, July 18th.

Re-opening Party will be Saturday July 18

The Friends of the Montclair Library invite you to a re-opening party to celebrate the return of our local library.

Join us at the library Saturday, July 18th from 11am-3pm.  We’ll have light refreshments, plus a book sale featuring kids’ books for 25 cents-$1 each and grown-up books for $1 each.  Sale proceeds benefit children’s programs at the library.  Kids will also be able to sign up for the library’s summer reading program.

Library to re-open Monday, July 6

After being closed since March for mold abatement and budget cuts, our local library will re-open for business Monday, July 6th from 12:30-8pm!

For now, library hours will stay the same as before the closure.  There’s a good chance hours will change sometime in the future as the city and the library work through the budget crunch.  You can always check the Oakland Library’s official Montclair page at http://www.oaklandlibrary.org/Branches/montclair.htm for current hours and status.
