FOPL newsletter July/August 2010

The Friends of the Oakland Public Library published an article about the Friends of Montclair Library in their July/August 2010 newsletter. The article’s on page 4 and talks about our group’s activities and goals. There’s also a nice photo of the library and of our spring knitting workshop for kids. Thanks, FOPL!

Summer reading programs

Make a splash!

The OPL’s summer reading program launched last Saturday 6/12, encouraging readers of all ages to “Make a Splash!”

Kids ages 13 and under can drop by any branch library or the Main Library’s Children’s Room to sign up. Read 8 hours during the summer and be eligible to win a free book and other prizes. (I’m not sure what’s planned for this year, but last year’s prizes were great – discounts and free admissions at places like Chabot Space & Science Center, MOCHA and more.) Parents and older children may read to children who aren’t reading yet. The program runs through August 14.

Adults can get in on the fun this summer, too. Adult patrons can fill out a raffle ticket at Montclair and other participating branches each time they read a book and become eligible to win prizes at monthly drawings held at each participating library location. Patrons who wish to do so may also write brief reviews of the books they have read to share with others. Participants will be free to read any books and types of material of their choice.

Teens ages 12-18 get their own special Teen Summer Passport program. Pick up a passport at any branch of the Oakland Public Library and you’ll receive a list of recommended Bay Area Hot Spots to explore, including museums, farmers’ markets, skate parks and cemeteries. Each time a teen visits one of these cultural sites, they can get their passport stamped. In addition to visiting local attractions, teens can also collect passport stamps by reading and writing short reviews; attending library programs; producing a self-portrait for their passport (digital, photo, or drawing); or volunteering for worthy causes. Three passport stamps will earn a raffle ticket (up to a maximum of 8 raffle tickets) for a drawing for prizes like a computer and an iPod Shuffle.

Thanks, Montclair!

Sign made by kids from Aurora School

It was a busy and exciting month at the library in May, and we couldn’t have done it without you! Thanks to everyone who came to our history and mystery presentations (and to our wonderful presenters!), shopped at our successful book sale, donated to our book sale…and to the staff and volunteers who made everything happen behind the scenes. And thanks to the awesome kids and parents from Aurora School, who came to our birthday party 5/22 and presented us with a lovely check for 25% of the proceeds from their 5K run. Last but not least, thanks to OPL Director of Library Services Carmen Martinez for coming to the party, and to city council rep Jean Quan and Community Liaison Sue Piper for bringing the birthday cake.

We really do have a great community here in Montclair, and we sincerely appreciate your support for the library, especially in these tough economic times.

80 Years of Mystery

Author Mark Coggins

Join us Saturday, May 22, 2010 from 1-2pm for our final anniversary program of the month, 80 YEARS OF MYSTERY with author Mark Coggins.

1930, the year the Montclair library opened, was also the year Dashiell Hammett’s “The Maltese Falcon” was published. On Saturday, mystery author Mark Coggins talks about the book’s place in the crime fiction canon and the real locations in San Francisco where the story is set. He will also discuss his latest novel, “The Big Wake Up,” and the real locations in Oakland where it is set. Special thanks to the Sisters in Crime Speakers Bureau for helping organize this event.

About Mark: Mark Coggins worked for a number of Silicon Valley computer and venture capital firms, including Netscape Communications, VeriSign and Hewlett Packard Company, before turning to a life of crime…er, writing about crime. His novels featuring wise-cracking San Francisco private eye August Riordan include “The Big Wake-Up,” “Vulture Capital” and “Runoff.”
More info: www.markcoggins.com

After the presentation all are invited to join staff and the Friends of the Montclair Library for a party with cake (thanks to city council rep Jean Quan’s office) at 2:30 p.m.
