Fall Book Sale

Fall leaf photo by Anne Hornyak via Flickr

Okay, we said we weren’t going to do it this year, but we just couldn’t stay away: The Fall Book Sale returns Saturday, September 20th from 10:30am-3:00pm. Stock up on back-to-school reading, holiday gifts, classroom books – we have an especially good selection of children’s books this year. And we hope to have a section of antiquarian books, too – stay tuned for details.

We could always use more donations, especially recent adult fiction – if your bookshelves are stuffed, why not bring a box or bag of gently-used books down to the library during business hours? Your books will go to others in our community, and the proceeds directly benefit programs and facilities at the Montclair branch. Win-win. Plus you’ll have more space for all the books you’re going to buy on the 20th…

New and improved

New Montclair Library tote bags

Our latest batch of Montclair Library tote bags is in, and they’re better than ever! Based on your feedback, they have longer handles (so they fit over your shoulder) and are a tad roomier to fit all your books (or farmer’s market purchases, groceries, gym gear, or whatever you need to carry in style). And they’re still made of 100% cotton canvas and screen-printed with eco-friendly water-based inks right here in Oakland. Get yours at the library, still just $10 each, with all profits going directly to the Montclair branch.

It’s dry out there

Drought photo by Kevin Cortopassi via Flickr

With our state in the midst of a severe drought, Californians have been asked to voluntarily cut back on water use 10%. The library might not be the first resource you think of when it comes to saving water, but here are 4 Ways the Public Library Can Help You Deal with the Drought:

1. Learn about water-efficient landscaping in the 635 section of the library…or even how to set up a home greywater system.

2. Use the library’s free public computers with internet access to look up some of these helpful websites:

3. If you need to fix a leak or install a new low-flow toilet or other water-efficient plumbing fixture, borrow the tools you need from the Tool Lending Library.

4. Use the library’s Encore tool to search for and access articles and even podcasts about different perspectives on the drought from NPR to Hay & Forage Grower magazine.

Where do we go from here?

Save Oakland Libraries is hosting a brainstorming meeting for all library lovers about the budget shortfall.

Starting in July 2015, the Oakland Public Libraryโ€™s budget will be short by $2.5-$3.5 million per year. Unless the City steps up, Oakland Public Library will have to either:

* Close 6-8 branches, OR
* Stop buying books/movies and close 3 branches.

The City Council placed $500,000 in the OPL’s Reserve Fund as a start toward filling the gap. So where do we go from here? All library lovers are invited to a workshop to review our short- and long-term sustainability options; find out what WE can do, and brainstorm ways to draw public and media attention to this impending funding crisis.

WHEN: 1:30-3:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24
WHERE: Main Library, 125 14th St., Brad Walters Community Room (downstairs)
WHO: YOU, and every library lover you know!

Outlander

With the eighth book in the series just out (and in its eighth straight week on the NY Times Hardover Fiction Best Sellers list) and Starz launching a TV series based on the books this weekend, Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series is a hot topic right now.

If you haven’t read the books yet, Gavin McNett nailed the description while writing for Salon in 1999 when he called it “the smartest historical sci-fi adventure-romance story ever written by a science Ph. D. with a background in scripting ‘Scrooge McDuck’ comics.” Well put.

Only the latest 2 books from the series are available on paper at the Montclair branch, but all the books, plus some extra novellas, are available as e-books from OPL. E-books are a great option for summer travel (or summer staying at home), especially with books like these that often clock in at over 800 pages each.

And if you’d like some help using e-books from the library, don’t forget there’s an e-book workshop coming up next Saturday August 16th from 3-5pm at the Montclair branch!

Here’s the series in order:

1. Outlander | CD | E-book
2. Dragonfly in Amber | E-book
3. Voyager | CD | E-book
4. Drums of Autumn | E-book
5. The Fiery Cross | E-book
6. A Breath of Snow and Ashes | E-book
7. An Echo in the Bone | E-book
8. Written in My Own Heart’s Blood | E-book

And if you need a little background help to sort it all out (or you just can’t get enough Claire and Jamie), there’s The Outlandish Companion: In Which Much is Revealed Regarding Claire and Jamie Fraser, Their Lives and Times, Antecedents, Adventures, Companions, and Progeny, with Learned Commentary (and Many Footnotes) by Their Humble Creator (813.54 GABALDON).
