With the eighth book in the series just out (and in its eighth straight week on the NY Times Hardover Fiction Best Sellers list) and Starz launching a TV series based on the books this weekend, Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series is a hot topic right now.
If you haven’t read the books yet, Gavin McNett nailed the description while writing for Salon in 1999 when he called it “the smartest historical sci-fi adventure-romance story ever written by a science Ph. D. with a background in scripting ‘Scrooge McDuck’ comics.” Well put.
Only the latest 2 books from the series are available on paper at the Montclair branch, but all the books, plus some extra novellas, are available as e-books from OPL. E-books are a great option for summer travel (or summer staying at home), especially with books like these that often clock in at over 800 pages each.
And if you’d like some help using e-books from the library, don’t forget there’s an e-book workshop coming up next Saturday August 16th from 3-5pm at the Montclair branch!
Here’s the series in order:
1. Outlander | CD | E-book
2. Dragonfly in Amber | E-book
3. Voyager | CD | E-book
4. Drums of Autumn | E-book
5. The Fiery Cross | E-book
6. A Breath of Snow and Ashes | E-book
7. An Echo in the Bone | E-book
8. Written in My Own Heart’s Blood | E-book
And if you need a little background help to sort it all out (or you just can’t get enough Claire and Jamie), there’s The Outlandish Companion: In Which Much is Revealed Regarding Claire and Jamie Fraser, Their Lives and Times, Antecedents, Adventures, Companions, and Progeny, with Learned Commentary (and Many Footnotes) by Their Humble Creator (813.54 GABALDON).
