Being thankful

Thanksgiving has us thinking about things we’re thankful for, like libraries and their ardent supporters! Here are a dozen children’s books about gratitude and giving thanks, for Thanksgiving and every day, along with a handful of recommendations for adults, too.

Don’t forget the Montclair branch will be closed Thursday, November 27th and Friday, November 28th this week for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Children's books about gratitude - a list by the Friends of Montclair Library

Quote about writing from Toni Morrison

November 1-30
November is National Novel Writing Month – and the library is a great place to write your novel! It’s nice and quiet, especially in the mornings (except Thursday mornings storytimes!), and you can go distraction-free, use the free WiFi to research your book (or procrastinate), and get inspiration from all the published books around you. “Come Write In!”

Montclair Library Kids Book Club – 3:30 pm
Kids in grades 3-6 are invited to come choose the first book to read for a new kids book club at the library. Snacks provided!

Author talk with Michael Goldstein – 6:30-7:30pm
In Return of the Light: A Political Fable in Which the American People Retake Their Country, it is the night of the Winter Solstice in 2120. At one of thousands of community gatherings across the United States, a storyteller does the annual retelling of how, back in 2023, a decade-long movement culminated in the people taking over their own government, making it a means for mobilizing their collective power to promote peace, social justice, and a society hospitable to the needs of the human spirit.

Part vision of the road forward for today’s concerned citizens, part organizing tool, this novel is a wonderful source of hope and inspiration.

Michael Goldstein blogs in the Huffington Post and OpenSalon.com, focusing on the need to move beyond the teeter-totter of the two-party system and the means to do so. Goldstein works as a mediator and death-penalty appeals lawyer in Northern California.

Not-too-scary monster books

If You're a Monster and You Know It by Rebecca Emberley

In honor of Halloween, here are some picture books from the Montclair collection featuring (mostly) friendly monsters, for your little monsters to enjoy. Happy Halloween!

[UPDATE 10/1/25: We’ve updated the links in this post to the new library catalog!]

If You’re a Monster and You Know It by Rebecca Emberley & Ed Emberley (J 782.42 EMBERLEY). Colorful monsters sing their own version of this popular song.

Leonardo the Terrible Monster by Mo Willems (J PICBK WILLEMS). Leonardo is a terrible monster — he can’t seem to frighten anyone. When he discovers the perfect nervous little boy, will he scare the lunch out of him? Or will he think of something better?

The Monster at the End of This Book by Jon Stone (J PICBK STONE). Grover (of “Sesame Street” fame) worries page by page about meeting the monster at the end of this book.

Nighty Night Little Green Monster by Ed Emberley (J PICBK EMBERLEY). With the turn of every page, Little Green Monster’s face gradually appears.

Monsters on Machines by Deb Lund (J PICBK LUND). Construction crew monsters work together to build a haunted house.

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak (J PICBK SENDAK). A naughty little boy, sent to bed without his supper, sails to the land of the wild things and becomes their king.

My Monster Mama Loves Me So by Laura Leuck (J PICBK LEUCK). A young monster describes all the things its mother does to show she loves it.

Monsters vs. Kittens by Dani Jones (J PICBK JONES). Text and pictures humorously compare the characteristics of kittens and monsters.

I Need My Monster by Amanda Noll (J PICBK NOLL). When Ethan checks under the bed for his monster, he finds a note saying that Gabe has gone fishing and will be back in a week. He tries out several substitute monsters, but finds that none are as perfect as Gabe.

Goodnight Goon: A Petrifying Parody by Michael Rex (J PICBK REX). A young monster says goodnight to all of the other monsters in his bedroom.
