Happy Mother’s Day!

Since the library is closed on Sunday, we’re sending out Mother’s Day wishes a day early! The Montclair branch’s storytimes (toddlers Thursdays at 10:15, babies Thursdays at 11:30, families Saturdays at 10:15) are a great place to meet other moms and check out some mom-themed picture books (from sweet to silly) for Mother’s Day:

  1. My Mom and Me by Alyssa Satin Capucilli (ages 2-5)
  2. Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother, Too? by Eric Carle (ages 3-6)
  3. My Mom Has X-ray Vision by Angela McAllister (ages 3-6)
  4. Mama, Do You Love Me? by Barbara M. Joosse (ages 3-7)
  5. My Monster Mama Loves Me So by Laura Leuck (ages 3-8)
  6. Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present by Charlotte Zolotow (ages 4-6)
  7. Are You My Mother? by P. D. Eastman (ages 4-6)

Books You Never Knew Existed

Sci-Fi Baby Names - images courtesy of GoodReadsOne of my favorite things about helping sort books before our big book sales is getting to see a snapshot of what our community is reading. I also love discovering books I never knew existed, like Creative Cooking The Costco Way – Favorite Recipes Using Costco Products (who knew Costco had published not just one but several cookbooks?), Hide Your Assets and Disappear: A Step-by-Step Guide to Vanishing Without a Trace (curious to know what happened to the person who donated that one), and my personal favorite, Sci-Fi Baby Names: 500 Out-of-This-World Baby Names from Anakin to Zardoz. I’m looking forward to seeing little Leias and Neos picking out books of their own at the book sale in a few years.

Thank you!

Thank you in many languages, by Woodley Wonder Works via Flickr
Once again, our community and volunteers have contributed to an excellent book sale – thanks to everyone who donated books, sorted books, moved books, bought books, sold books…the list goes on, and we couldn’t have done it without any of you.

Speaking of lists and fundraising, here’s a list of some of the things we’ve been able to fund for the library with the proceeds from our book sales and other fundraising:

1. Adult books, including best sellers, & books on CD
2. Children’s learning and story-time materials
3. Children’s and adult’s programs in the library
4. Prizes for Children’s Summer Reading Programs
5. Bench for patrons’ use outside the library
6. Teen Volunteer Recognition event
7. Upgrade to library book shelves
8. Baby changing station in the library restroom

Thanks!

Good Reads

GoodReads
If you’re an avid reader, you probably already know about GoodReads.com, where you can track and rate the books you’ve read and hope to read, and find recommendations for books you might like based on your past choices. It’s a pretty fun tool if you’re a book-geek like me.

Using the import/export link on the left side of Good Reads once you’re logged in, you can also export your list of books (in CSV format, which can be imported into a spreadsheet or other applications) which might help you make a wishlist for our big Spring Book Sale at the library tomorrow. Whether you come armed with a list or prefer to rely on serendipitous browsing, we’ve got something for just about everyone. Stop by between 10:30am and 3pm to find your next good read.

Book sale coming up!

Book Sale at Montclair Library

Our big Spring Book Sale is coming up this Saturday, May 5th, at the Montclair branch. We’ll be open from 10:30am-3:00pm (no early birds, please!) with all sorts of delightful gently used books, most priced under $2. Choices include children’s books (board books, picture books, easy readers, chapter books, non-fiction), adult recent fiction and classics, plus adult non-fiction including cookbooks, travel, advice and a great selection of craft, decorating and gardening books. Don’t forget to check out our famous basket of Little Books You Didn’t Know You Needed! There’s something for everyone.

Please note: There will be an event at the Women’s Club across the street from the library starting at 11am, so if you’re driving plan for extra time to park (or park in the Village garage and stroll down to the library – once you’ve paid for your books, we’ll gladly hold them while you go get your car).

Put a poem in your pocket!

Poems in Your Pocket for kids at the Montclair Library

Today is Poem in Your Pocket Day, sponsored by the Academy of American Poets as part of National Poetry Month. Stop by the Montclair Branch today to pick up a poem — we have kids’ versions and grown-up ones — to carry in your pocket and share with family and friends.

If you can’t make it into the library, the AAP has PDF poems you can download and even and a mobile phone app.

Shakespeare’s birthday

Shakespeare Reading, by William Page
April 23rd is celebrated as William Shakespeare’s birthday – his 448th, to be exact. Shakespeare and his works have inspired other authors with countless themes, variations and turns of phrase over the ensuing years. Why not celebrate by reading one of his works, a book about him, or some fiction inspired by him? If you don’t have time for a full play, his sonnets are bite-sized Shakespeare (and perfect for National Poetry Month!).

Plus a few for the kids:

Parking Update

ParkMobile sign in downtown Oakland - photo by ParkMobile

We know parking at the Montclair branch can be tricky. We worked with the city last year (thanks, councilmember Libby Schaaf!) to get the green 12-minute zone in front of the library repainted, so you have a fighting chance of finding a quick spot to park while dropping off books or people, but there’s often not enough parking to go around in the busy block with the school and the library.

To make things just a tiny bit easier, if you’re parked in one of the metered spaces a little further up the hill in the Village you can now add to your meter time from your mobile phone. Just look for the green ParkMobile sign at the kiosk where you pay for your parking and note the parking zone number. Then download the free ParkMobile app, and it will not only text you when you have 15 minutes left, but you can add time up to the 2-hour limit right from your phone (a small service fee may apply). It’s not as good as free parking, but it sure beats trying to hustle up the hill with kids and books in tow, or getting a ticket!

Speaking of free parking, did you know that shopping at many of our local merchants (44 of them and counting) can earn you free parking in the Village garage? For lots of details on Village parking, including a list of retailers who validate, see the Montclair Village Association website.

Of course, with Earth Day coming up and the weather so nice, you might want to walk, bike or take the bus to the Montclair branch if you can – there’s a bike rack right out front waiting for you!
