Ahoy!

The Tepid Tears of Moby-Dick by Angela Cockayne

“The Tepid Tears of Moby-Dick” print by Angela Cockayne, a fundraiser for Whale & Dolphin Conservation

Today is the 161st anniversary of the publication of Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick, or, The White Whale. While the book debuted to mixed or even negative reviews, today it’s considered a classic, and you can find several versions of it in the Montclair library’s Classics section, or as an e-book.

Or click on over to the Moby-Dick Big Read to hear “each of its 135 chapters read out aloud, by a mixture of the celebrated and the unknown, to be broadcast online in a sequence of 135 downloads, publicly and freely accessible.”

For a different take on the story, check out Ahab’s Wife, or, The Star-Gazer: A Novel by Sena Jeter Naslund.

Teen Read Week

Teen Read Week from YALSA
This week (October 14-20) is Teen Read Week, a national literacy initiative from the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). The week’s goal is to inspire teens to read for fun — on paper, online, or on an e-reader — and to use their library to find great reading materials, according to YALSA President H. Jack Martin’s article for the Huffington Post, which includes some pretty impressive statistics about how reading benefits teens.

Just in time for Halloween, this year’s Teen Read Week theme, “It Came From the Library,” celebrates “creepy mysteries, spooky horror stories, sordid tales of love and betrayal, eerie dystopic romances and mangas.”

Looking for some reading suggestions? Check out YALSA’s Teens’ Top Ten, including the wildly popular The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (e-book) by Ransom Riggs, and Across the Universe by Beth Revis; NPR’s 100 Best-Ever Teen Novels; or selections from YALSA’s 2012 Top Ten Best Fiction for Young Adults, including Shine by Lauren Myracle, Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys, and How to Save a Life (e-book) by Sara Zarr.

Literary lecture

Cover of The Golden Gate by Vikram Seth

Poet and novelist Vikram Seth will be giving a free lecture tonight (10/15/12) at 6pm at UC Berkeley’s International House. The event is open to the public. For more information, see the I-House website or contact townsend_center@ls.berkeley.edu, 510-643-9670.

Seth’s first novel, The Golden Gate, is “composed entirely of rhyming tentrameter sonnets–690 of them to be precise–a satirical romance describing the stories of young professionals in San Francisco throughout their quests and questions to find, then deal with, love in their own lives as well as each others’,” according to his Emory University bio.

Other books by Seth in the Montclair library include the biography Two Lives, the novel An Equal Music, the travelogue From Heaven Lake: Travels Through Sinkiang and Tibet, and the poetry Three Chinese Poets: Translations of Poems by Wang Wei, Li Bai, and Du Fu.

Elsewhere in the OPL system, you’ll find works like A Suitable Boy, his award-winning 1474-page epic novel of Indian life set in the 1950s, and the children’s book Arion and the Dolphin.

Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15th-October 15th is National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Did you know the Oakland Public Library has an extensive collection of books in Spanish (and other languages, from Amharic to Tagalog, but that’s another post)? Nine branches have special collections of Spanish books, videos and CDs. Montclair’s collection isn’t one of the big ones, but there is a shelf of children’s books in Spanish or bilingual Spanish/English in the Children’s Room.

Some to try:
My Name is Celia: The Life of Celia Cruz / Me llamo Celia: La Vida de Celia Cruz by Monica Brown

Perros! Perros! / Dogs! Dogs! by Ginger Foglesong Guy

Taking a Walk: A Book in Two Languages / Caminando: Un Libro en Dos Lenguas by Rebecca Emberley

You can locate books in Spanish by using the facets in the Encore catalog to narrow down your search to items by language. You can even choose to use Encore en Espaรฑol by using the Language Settings option on the Encore start page.

And, of course, the library also has books in English about important people and events in Hispanic heritage, for both kids and adults. For inspiration, try this Hispanic Heritage Month Booklist from PBS or this list of books for all ages from the Florida Department of Education. Try putting “books hispanic heritage month” into your favorite search engine to find lots more suggestions.

Recycled art contest

Art made from cardboard tubes by erika g. via Flickr

“Recycled art” is one of the top search terms that brings people to the FOML website, so I know many of you are going to be excited about the 2012 Re-Create Art Contest!

Re-Create is Oaklandโ€™s annual recycled art competition and exhibition open to student artists (K-12) in Oakland schools. Students are invited to create artwork using discarded or reused materials, and compete for one of fifteen prizes. First prize is $50 — not too shabby!

The contest is sponsored by the City of Oakland Public Works Agency and produced by the Museum of Children’s Art in recognition of America Recycles Day. There are more details and an entry form here. The entry deadline is November 11, 2012.

On Wednesday, October 17 at 3:00pm, MOCHA will provide a FREE hands-on workshop at the Montclair branch where kids can create artwork from discarded materials for the contest.

Looking for some inspiration? Check out MOCHA’s page with curriculum ideas, recycled art instructions, materials sources and links to other websites about recycled art.

Books on the loose

Books released in Montclair Village 10/5/12

I just released a few books I bought at last month’s book sale in Montclair Village as part of BookCrossing’s “Read and Release” program – each book has an ID number inside the front cover, so if you find it, please go to bookcrossing.com and log the book so we can see where it travels. You don’t need to make an account or release any personal information, just the book and city.

Look for:

  • High Fidelity by Nick Hornby – at the bus stop in front of the tennis courts at Mountain and Colton
  • The Year of Fog by Michelle Richmond – on the bench outside Nelly’s Java
  • The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkein – on a table outside Yogofina
