Happy 100th Day of School!

Books for the 100th Day of School, a list by the Friends of Montclair Library

Today is the 100th day of school for OUSD students, an occasion you’ll see marked by kindergartners across town toting displays of 100 toothpicks, 100 candies, 100 pennies, 100 paperclips and more.

Not surprisingly, the 100th day and counting to 100 are a big deal in picture books, too. Here are 19 books from OPL to help you celebrate the 100th day milestone:

100 School Days by Anne Rockwell (J PICBK ROCKWELL) – “Mrs. Madoff’s class is counting pennies — one for every day of school. When they get to 10 pennies, they know they’ve been going to school for 10 days. What will happen when they get to 100? How will they celebrate Day 100, and what will they do with their 100 pennies?” (GoodReads)

100 Days of School by Trudy Harris (J 513.211 HARRIS) – A series of rhymes illustrates different ways to count to 100 such as by adding the ten toes of ten children or ninety-nine train cars plus one caboose.

Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the 100th Day of Kindergarten by Joseph Slate (J PICBK SLATE) (not at Montclair) – To celebrate one hundred days in Miss Bindergarten’s kindergarten class, all her students bring one hundred of something to school, including a one hundred-year-old relative, one hundred candy hearts and one hundred polka dots.

Emily’s First 100 Days of School by Rosemary Wells (J PICBK WELLS) – Starting with number one for the first day of school, Emily learns the numbers to one hundred in many different ways.

Counting Our Way to the 100th Day! by Betsy Franco (J 811.54 FRANCO) (not at Montclair) – A poem a day to count down to the 100th day of school!

Planet Kindergarten: 100 Days in Orbit by Sue Ganz-Schmitt (J PICBK GANZ) (not at Montclair) – A young child imagines kindergarten as a mission in space, with his fellow kindernauts, and this is their one hundredth day.

Happy 100th Day! by Susan Milord (J PICBK MILORD) (not at Montclair) – Graham Elmore hates school, but as the year progresses toward the day that is both his birthday and the hundredth day of school, Graham’s reading improves, and so does his outlook.

100th Day Worries by Margery Cuyler (J PICBK CUYLER) (not at Montclair) – Jessica worries about collecting 100 objects to take to class for the 100th day of school.

Jake’s 100th Day of School by Lester L. Laminack (J PICBK LAMINACK) (not at Montclair) – Jake is so excited about his 100th Day of School, he runs to catch the school bus without his project, but fortunately, with the help of his principal, Jake is able to find a perfect substitute for his project.

100 Ways to Celebrate 100 Days by Bruce Goldstone (J 513 GOLDSTONE) (not at Montclair) – “From collecting to counting, baking to bouncing, reading to writing, every possible kind of activity is included for 100th day celebrations at home or at school.” (Publisher)

Let’s Count to 100! by Masayuki Sebe (J 513.211 SEBE) (not at Montclair, but under consideration) – Illustrations with one hundred things in them, including mice, people, elephants, and more, introduce the concepts of numbers, few, many, and counting by tens. (Also available in Spanish.)

100 Bears by Magali Bardos (J PICBK BARDOS) (not at Montclair) – “In one forest, between two mountains, three bears put their four paws in the air. From 1 to 100, follow the number trail through this bonkers bear tale.” (Cover)

100 Hungry Monkeys! by Masayuki Sebe (J PICBK SEBE) – One hundred monkeys are hunting for food but something big and scary is hungry, too.

One Hundred Hungry Ants by Elinor J. Pinczes (J PICBK PINCZES) (not at Montclair) – One hundred hungry ants head towards a picnic to get yummies for their tummies, but stops to change their line formation, showing different divisions of one hundred, cause them to lose both time and food in the end.

100 Snowmen by Jen Arena (J PICBK DUSSLING) (not at Montclair) – As you count and add, watch the snowmen enjoy a snowball fight, make funny faces, play hide-and-seek, and just plain have fun.

100 Things that Make Me Happy by Amy Schwartz (J PICBK SCHWARTZ) (not at Montclair) – Lists a wide variety of items, from red socks to peekaboo, that can make one happy.

100 Animals on Parade! by Masayuki Sebe (J PICBK SEBE) (not at Montclair) – With hundreds of colorful animals to count and hundreds of hilarious details to hunt, this unconventional counting book guarantees hundreds of hours of fun!

100 Days of Cool by Stuart J. Murphy (J 513.211 MURPHY) (not at Montclair) – Four students arrive on the first day of school looking cool and their teacher challenges them to keep it up as they count down one hundred days to a cool celebration.

From One to One Hundred by Teri Sloat (J PICBK SLOAT) – Illustrations of people and animals introduce the numbers one through ten and then, counting by tens, move on up to 100.
