Things to be thankful for

Here’s a short list of things we’re thankful for this year:

  • people who donate books to the library book sales
  • people who buy books at our book sales to support the library
  • volunteers, like the Hillside Gardeners who maintain the library grounds and the teens who helped with the summer reading program
  • the fact that no Oakland libraries were permanently closed this year
  • our sweet little library and the staff who work so hard to make it function

The Montclair branch will be closed this Thursday 11/24 and Friday 11/25 for Thanksgiving, plus Saturday 11/26 for the budget shortage.  Add in the regular Sunday and Monday closures, and we’ll see you back Tuesday 11/29.

The branch is open till 5:30 tonight, so you have a few more hours to snag some holiday reading, like Thanks for Thanksgiving by Julie Markes, Trucksgiving by Jon Scieszka, It’s Thanksgiving! by Jack Prelutsky or Thanksgiving Is by Gail Gibbons.  Grown-ups might enjoy Sarah Vowell’s funny and enlightening cultural profile of Puritan life, The Wordy Shipmates.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks, Montclair!

Thanks to our friends and neighbors for another great book sale last weekend – we’re always so thrilled by the community response and happy to be able to raise money that goes right back into the Montclair branch. In the coming months you will see your donations in action as the Friends of Montclair Library recently gave money to the branch to buy more story-time materials and augment the adult materials budget.

Sorting books for the sale is one of my favorite activities, because I get to hang out with the other Friends members and see all the cool books the community donates. I also like seeing the interesting things people leave behind in the books they donate: A hand-written guacamole recipe, a Kowloon airport transfer ticket, the 1989-90 Pittsburgh Penguins pocket schedule. If you left your new AAA card in one of the books you donated, though, please contact the library for details on getting it back.

Coming up at the library

Project from 2010 ReCreate contest

All branch libraries will be closed this Saturday, October 8th, due to the citywide budget shortage. The library will be open again as usual on Tuesday, October 11.

Lawyers in the Library returns Tuesday, October 11 from 6-8pm.

On Wednesday, October 12th at 3pm, kids can participate in the ReCreate Art Competition sponsored by MOCHA and Sustainable Oakland. Create art using recycled materials and have your artwork judged by experts! Or… Just have fun. Join us as MOCHA provides the artistic expertise and the Oakland Public Works Agency provides the materials and funding. You can find out more about the contest on the Oakland Recycles website.
