Reading furniture

Chair made from paperback books

Branch manager Lynne sent me this photo the other day of a cool chair she encountered in her travels – the seat and back are made from paperback books.  While I’m still undecided about how comfortable such a chair might be, it got me thinking about book furniture.  Further research seems to indicate that building furniture out of books is kind of a thing — I’m really digging this bookstore counter made of stacked books, although I don’t think stacking up books and calling them side tables counts – nice try, Real Simple.

While you’re contemplating book chairs, why not check out some books with chairs in the title?

For grown-ups, there’s Sue Monk Kidd’s Mermaid Chair at the Montclair branch, and further afield you can find chair treatises like  The Chair: Rethinking Culture, Body, and Design by Galen Cranz at Rockridge or Please Be Seated: The Evolution of the Chair, 2000 BC-2000 AD by Marvin D. Schwartz at Main.

Also at other branches, you’ll find more tenuously chair-related books like The Blue Chair Jam Cookbook by Rachel Saunders (Rockridge and others); Tolstoy and the Purple Chair: My Year of Magical Reading by Nina Sankovitch (Lakeview and others); and Hemingway’s Chair by Michael Palin (Rockridge).

Kid’s books featuring chairs at the Montclair branch include:
Peter’s Chair by Ezra Jack Keats
A Chair for My Mother by Vera B. Williams
The Silver Chair by C.S. Lewis
Down the Back of the Chair by Margaret Mahy
A Chair for Always by Vera B. Williams
Bears on Chairs by Shirley Parenteau

And elsewhere in the OPL system you’ll find My Chair by Betsy James and The Seven Chairs by Helen Lanteigne.

Now go find a comfy chair (made of books or not) and start reading!

Walking Montclair

My household has been working its way through the walks in Charles Fleming’s Secret Stairs East Bay: A Walking Guide to the Historic Staircases of Berkeley and Oakland over the past year or so, and we finally got around to trying Walk #32: Montclair Village, which includes a shout-out to “the charming structure at 1687 — the storybook, slate-roofed Montclair branch of the public library.” This walk, exploring the hidden stairways of Montclair (read: lots of steps) would be a great way to shake your tail feathers after Thanksgiving dinner, or to fill those long, empty hours while the library is closed for Thanksgiving this Thursday 11/28 and Friday 11/29.

The book is also available for check-out as an e-book through the OPL website — and, bonus, e-books can be checked out 24/7, even when the library is closed.

If you find yourself addicted to exploring off-the-beaten-path paths, Stephen Altschuler’s Hidden Walks in the East Bay & Marin: Pathways, Essays, & Yesterdays (available at Dimond, Piedmont and Temescal) is another great resource.

JFK

JFK reading on a boat

As you’ve probably heard just about everywhere, today is the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination on November 22, 1963.

You may not know that Kennedy was an avid reader and natural speed reader who could read about 2,500 wpm (10 times the average reading speed). He would read 6 newspapers from cover to cover while he had breakfast.  According to his IMDB bio, Kennedy liked the James Bond novels of Ian Fleming, particularly From Russia with Love.

More random literary trivia: Other famous people who died November 22, 1963 include C.S. Lewis and Aldous Huxley.

To learn more about Kennedy’s life and death, check out one of these books at the Montclair branch:

End of Days: The Assassination of John F. Kennedy by James L. Swanson
11/22/63: A Novel by Stephen King
Camelot’s Court: Inside the Kennedy White House by Robert Dallek
Ask Not: The Inauguration of President John F. Kennedy and the Speech that Changed America by Thurston Clarke
Jack’s Path of Courage: The Life of John F. Kennedy by Doreen Rappaport (children’s)
